I am considering putting in a different brand choke in the power supply of my stereomour 1. I have the triad c7x and for no good reason I am tossing around the idea of putting in a "better" component. Has anyone tried chokes other than say hammond or the triad in a similar parafeed circuit to the stereomour. Not sure if there would be a benefit or possible benefit. $ would suggest yes but I mainly have found info related to build quality and $ for filter chokes in power supplies. The triad seems well built to me.
There is a Sowter CB14 10H 100ma 156ohm that looks good if I add a bit of series resistance to keep voltages good or do 4 of them haha. They are about the same size as the triad.
Thanks
Eric

In the original Paramour (that goes back a ways!) the C7-X is a plate choke, not a power supply choke. It's 10 henries, which is on the small side. More inductance will make a big improvement in the bass, but works best with a larger and more optimized output transformer. Back in the day, we had an upgrade kit with a higher-inductance choke and an upgrade transformer, which is no longer available.

I believe Magnequest still has a candidate set, and we have since then developed our own iron which is used in the Stereomour and S.E.X. amps. I'll link it below. Unfortunately I don't think there are detailed instructions on making the mod, but I believe it's been done by some.

This is a little complicated, but if one of these ideas interests you we can talk further.

Paul,
I thought re-using the C7-X in the power supply added to a smoother and more reactive power supply, the graphs on PSUD looked better with the choke than with the resistor.  I thought more inductance on the plate choke (I used Dowdy chokes in my Stereomour I) gave a better bass response.
Not meaning to contradict, just trying to understand it myself, I thought adding the choke to the power supply made for a cleaner power which is better overall and more inductance in the plate choke made for better response in the lower frequencies for a given output transformer.

Excuse this post if it is crazy talk, too many super chavela's with dinner, its the first really hot day here and we are celebrating....

Ah! I did not know you had modified the power supply and upgraded the iron, so I assumed you were still running the stock components. Sorry for the confusion - your understanding is correct.

You are also correct in saying that a change in the power supply choke is "...for no good reason..." - there is no technical reason to prefer a different choke; the C7-X is as you say well built. I have no problem with making changes for "no good reason" - sometimes you discover something unexpected. If you do try it, and find a difference, please share on the forum!

a choke with more inductance and the same dcr would smooth the supply without altering the voltage much.

How much power supply ripple are you hearing out of your speakers?

Choke quality isn't going to do a lot for you in a power supply.  A plate choke needs to be designed carefully for good AF response, while a power supply choke does not.  Paying extra for a plate choke to use in a power supply may actually have some disadvantages.
