I read on Audio Asylum that operating a tube amp with no load connected to the output can mess up the tubes. Why is this?
This would mean that an A/B switch would need to be make before break?

Don't believe everything you read on AA. If an amp has lots of global negative feedback it might go into oscillation with the output load removed. If an amp does not use negative global feedback this is not an issue.
