Hi,

I am currently assembling the safety ground lug and am having difficulty securing the #8 locknut onto the 8-32x3/8 screw.  I understand that I am supposed to use the 8-32x3/8 screw and not the self-tapping screw; however, it appears to me that the #8 locknut will not secure onto the screw at all.  It will, strangely, secure easily onto the self-tapping screw.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ben

That is really odd, as the self tapping screw should be the more difficult one for that nut to thread onto.  If you look at the start of the threads on the 3/8" screw, perhaps there's an imperfection.

Paul, you are right.  There appears to be an imperfection (tried posting a photo but did not go through).  What should I do now?  Is this type of screw easily found at a hardware store?

Is it alright if i use the self tapping screw for the safety ground lug once I have used it to cut a thread?

If the nut goes on the self tapping screw, that will certainly work.  If you're in the US, a replacement 8-32 3/8" screw should be available at any hardware store for less than $1.
