I was curious if someone could inform me whether there is a standard size for binding posts.  I'd like to dress my SEX up a bit with some new hardware and was considering these:  http://www.partsconnexion.com/anote_72397.html

Thanks in advance,
Guy

The speaker binding posts that Bottlehead uses are standard distance center to center and standard banana plug holes.  This allows the use of dual banana plugs:

These come in red and black for right and left.  There are speaker terminals, five way binding posts, out there that cost up to insane prices, hundreds of dollars.

Thanks for the quick reply, Grainger.  I was mostly curious about the binding post mounting hole diameter, rather than the center-to-center distance, as I use single plugs.  Unlike with RCA jacks, it seems there's not often mention of the hole diameter for binding posts, so I was wondering if anyone had experience with swapping the stock posts for aftermarket pieces.

You are, of course, correct that having dual plugs and dual posts makes things easier for swapping, but as I've already settled on my single plugs, I'm only concerned about the posts fitting the plate holes.

I got'cha now.  I have a metal ream I bought from Radio Shack years ago that slowly opens up holes in the top plate.  A stepped drill bit will do much the same job.

But I can't answer your question about the hole diameter.

no not all binding posts are the same--those are metric partsconnexx says  they are small that makes them m6 according to audionote site--m6 is .2362 inch  slightly less than 1/4"--the large audionote is m8 which is .3149 slightly more than 1/4" closer to 5/16"--

To the OP,

The vampire "short" posts fit perfectly -- either the gold over brass or gold over copper (much more expensive) work great.  I believe the holes are half-inch and the shoulders for the vampires fit inside that very nicely.  I'm using the brass ones on my s.e.x. and the copper ones on my stereomour.

HTH,

Jim

Jim is right, the holes are 0.500 inch diameter. howardnair is also right, these things come in a wide variety of sizes, and in metric sizes as well as inch sizes. Very annoying that the hole size of these posts is not specified!

Standard insulating shoulder washers which fit 0.5" holes, have 3/8" (0.375") inside diameter, but of course these binding posts will have their own shoulder washers.

Why not write to Parts Connexion and ask for the necessary details? They are good folks, and would probably be glad to learn of something that confuses potential customers.

Thanks to everyone for the responses.

PJ - I went ahead and ordered the ones I had linked previously, assuming that I can make them fit if I need to.  However, I will send a short note to Parts Connexion and suggest the additions.  It seems strange to not have them listed, when it seems that all the RCA jacks have their mounting hole sizes listed.

Howard - I found the information you did, after some digging.  However, that only seems to tell part of the story.  What we really need is the shoulder diameter on the washer, rather than the screw size.  Of course, it's simple to make a reasonable guesstimate, and, if all else fails, it only makes me happier to get to fabricate something to make them fit!

I'll be sure and post here about fitment, when I get the posts in.  Thanks again, guys!

The ones you listed appear to have fairly long threads, so you can always stack more shoulder washers of progressively larger size! Might look kind of cool, actually.
