I just saw a cool quote attributed to Sammy Hagar regarding Eddie Van Halen's recording studio...

"My favorite thing about this remastering is the ‘5150’ and 'OU812," he said. "Those records were recorded in Eddie's old studio. Completely analog. There wasn't a digital piece of equipment and everything had a tube."

He continued, "Everything had to warm up before you could use it. And it's so warm. Those records recorded so warm. They were made for vinyl. They were made on, you know, tape, on 3-inch tape, and so they really benefit from the technology of today's remastering."

I might have to buy some new remastered vinyl.

Three inch tape? Like packing tape?  ;D Two inch, yes, and believe it or not I have a couple decks that use 4 inch. But no 3 inch recording tape was ever made to my knowledge. 3 inch diameter reels of 1/4" tape, yes.
If anyone is determined to do a whole analog tube recording chain I have an all tube Altec 250SU console for sale. 10 inputs. Righteously warm and detailed, fully gone thru and very quiet.
