My Quickie arrived from a fellow forum member.  It was BH built and has the Speco transformers, but currently out of the circuit.  I loaded it up with batteries , the stock GE tubes and let 'er rip!  Wow!!  I am having trouble believing what I am hearing. My main preamp is a PIO  & DACt attenuator modified Rogue Audio Magnum 99.  Hate to admit it, the Quickie gives it a run for the money. And that is pretty much stock.  I have NEVER heard tubes sing like these GE's.  :o  They seem to be fine, just don't touch the unit or it will ring like "Quasimodo on the ropes"!  I have the same tube in a 1947 RCA battery/AC powered portable radio and it is not microphonic, but different application. Some Herbies help significantly.

I ordered the PJCCS last week and the Queen got it here yesterday. It is built and ready to go in after a few more days of listening to stock.  The PO also included some Mullards and I have 1945 Sylvania's and 50's RCA's on the way from ePay.

I will replace the output caps with PIO's.  First in will be NOS Aerovox. (Really wax paper & foil, but that is being picky!)

Cheap fun and super sonics!!! Quickies are fun AND satisfying!!

Cheers,
Geary

Geary - It's good to have another Quickiehead on board! It a fun kit for sure. Along with the PJCCS, the chokes are a worthy mod to play with. I swap my PJCCS with chokes every so often. The jury is still out on which one I like better. The PJCCS is a 'cleaner' sound but IMO the chokes are bit 'larger' and nicely euphonic when used in a digital rig.

Geary,

Thanks for your impressions on this little wonder.  Looks like my kit will be arriving this coming week and I just got some nice tubes for it with more on the way.

Can't wait to get started on it and coming up with an interesting enclosure or whatever, for it.

Hey Jim - What tubes did you end up getting? I know you wanted the Telefunkies. I guess I got the last ones. I have a couple of Mullards. One went bad almost right away. I wasnt blown away or anything by their sound.

I'm going to try to get some more mullards. Where did you get them? How much? I think the ones I got were (very) used.

I got them from ebay seller "cyrod", who is think is the same guy who had the  teles.  $20 for the quad, plus shipping of course.  And the Mazdas came from ebay seller threemaudioshop in the Netherlands.  same price for the quad.

Of course I still have no idea what these will sound like, how many of them will be good, etc., but I figure if I even get a couple of good pairs out of the dozen I'll still be doing ok.
