Using JRiver as a media server

I'm not sure if this is the best place to write about using JRiver for classical music. I've already posted in this thread http://www.bottlehead.com/smf/index.php/topic,2811.15.html about the ripping and tagging process.

I've got the netbook set up in the music server configuration and have used the Gizmo app on my android phone and the WebRemote on my bigger laptop. At the moment I have Shura Cherkassky's 80th Birthday Recital at Carnegie Hall on the go. Well it was on the go. In the time that I have been typing this, our cat has thrown up on my amplifier and then walked over and sat on the netbook and managed to turn it off. Obviously the cat does not think too highly of the new solution. As a side note, I am using a solid state Fetzilla instead of my usual tube stuff since the cat likes to sit on warm objects. If this had been one of my tube amps, she would have just been electrocuted. Anybody want a cat?

I don't want to wade through the various JRiver forums so if somebody has answers to the following, I would be grateful.

For some reason or other, I can use my phone or my PC but not both at the same time. Is there a way around this?

When using WebRemote, is there a way to tell which track is playing? For example I have now moved on to Mathis Der Maler- St. Anthony's Temptation - Hindemith, Paul but I can't find a way to tell me which track I am on. The Playing List shows all the tracks but does not indicate which track is playing.

In the Library page, I have so many artists and albums that the page that lists them shows something like 123...11  Next at the top right of the page. If I want to find an artist or album that starts with an M I have to hit 11, then mess around until I get to 7. Since there is so much white space to the left, has anybody worked out how to show 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 instead. Or better still, A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L,M,N,O,P,Q,R,S,T,U,V,W,X,Y,Z.  Since I am a former programmer I presume this would involve a coding change but is anybody aware of how it could be done? OR maybe which JRiver forum I should post the question in.

Also on the Library page. It currently shows Artist, Album, Recent, Genre, Composer, Podcast and Highly Rated. Is there a way to add additional categories such as Orchestra and Conductor and to remove the ones I will probably never use like Podcast?

Or maybe I should just spend a couple of days wading though the JRiver forums.

Just ask on the MC17 forum. You could search for a day and not get to it all.   I usually receive answers within a couple of hours.  Sometimes I find that what I want isn't doable, but at least I know where I stand.

I'd like to know how best to tweak the program to get optimal sound quality, and what kind of system/hardware tweaks will be most beneficial.

They have instructions available through their help system.  I also followed advice on the Ayre and Wavelength site.  At one point I had set something wrong, posted a query on the forum and they quickly had Gordon Rankin of Wavelength involved.  Turned out I had simply forgotten to check a box due to my aging eyesight. 

On their player go to Tools > Options > Audio Output > Output Mode - Here I use Wasapi event style
Then set Audio Output Options as your DAC dictates - With my Wavelength Cosecant I check"Open device for exclusive use".

You can also use the DSP studio to play with upsampling if you wish.
