Now, I have no real immediate need for a quickie, though when I think about it isn't hard to find places where I might use it, so after reading all these good comments on the pjccs quickie, I ordered both.

I'll admit to almost buying one probably half a dozen times in the past, but just got stuck in analysis paralysis trying to come up with a rechargeable system I could live with, but then really decided that 100-200 hours on a set of batteries is probably plenty for what I might use it for, so that's the plan.

I'm really thinking this will be used in my bedside headphone rig with either a s.e.x. dedicated to headphone use or the Crack, and where it would be nice to be able to switch between two sources, and where the battery lifetime will be quite acceptable.

Shawn, I want you to know this is partly your fault/doing :-).  Now, where do I get those telefunken and amperex DL 92s?

Hey Jim - here is  a pic of my quickie to give you some ideas on rechargeables. I was using this battery for my t-amp, so I just used the same system for the Quickie. Instead of 'D''s for the heaters I used rechargeable AA's. The NMH pack in the pic is the 30V. I also have LiPo4 14V packs that I can add together to make other higher voltages. Fairly cheap really.

Hey Jim, I think you will like the Quickie. It is a great little pre-amp.Here is a link to the Telefunkens http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-pcs-NOS-TELEFUNKEN-DL92-3S4-CV484-TUBES-RADIO-VALVE-BLAUPUNKT-AUTORADIO-/400312194804?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item5d347756f4#ht_2284wt_866
The tubes I bought were not only in the original box, they still had the original clear plastic wrapping on the box! I forgot where I got the Mullards and Amperex, so I will have to look at my records. Also, Eric and I both really liked the RCAs, which you can find on Fleabay pretty often. I would pick up a couple of Halo tube dampers from Herbies audio lab. They help the microphonics quite a bit. I recently installed Mundorf MKPs at 68uf for the cathode bypass caps, the improvement was not subtle.

Cheers,
Shawn

Yea - no way I could get that on an airplane - even in checked baggage.

I've carried home-built tube gear onto the airplane in my carry-on luggage recently.  The TSA inspector knew exactly what it was.

I once carried an spl meter in a bag. They were very excited over it. I almost missed my flight.

Hey Eric, the Telefunkens have replaced the RCAs. They have more resolution than the other tubes I've tried, low microphonics and still quite warm. I've noticed they need to warm up a little before listening, not that these tubes actually get very warm. I like them alot, they look like they just came from the factory. I guess these were OEM for Blaupunkt car radios, I wonder how they dealt with the microphonics in that application.

Cheers,
Shawn

Did the "Radio Shack" on the face convince them it might be safe?

Ah, so it was you, Eric who snatched up those tubes while my internet connection was on the fritz.  At least it looks like they're all gone and no more listed by that seller.  He's got a quad of mullards up there now though.

Oh well, better luck next time, I guess.
