With a Dacport LX as a source, the speedball upgrade, chatham 5998 and RCA clear top 12au7 and the HD650, I have very room on the volume pot before I am at ear bleed levels.  Even with quiet music, I don't think I even hit 9 o'clock.  Rock music I am at around 7.  Is this normal?  Thanks to anyone who chimes in!

I haven't even been active on the forums for more than a few weeks, and I can already tell that this has to be Doc's favorite question.  :o :P ;D

The short answer is this: the output volume will depend on your source volume. Source volume can be all over the map, because nobody adheres to the supposed 2V "standard" (it is apparently a fairly artificial standard in the first place). As long as you can set an appropriate volume without getting channel imbalance, you should be fine and not worry about it.

Alternatively, you can add some resistors to the source signal or take the lazy route and do what I did...see here: http://www.bottlehead.com/smf/index.php/topic,3860.0.html.

Best regards,
Adam

We do seem to have been getting this question once or twice a week lately. And the funny thing is one guy says too loud the next guy says not loud enough! The questions tend to sort of pileup like that after we have shipped a large number of a certain kit, and we have been shipping an awful lot of Crack kits lately. Anyway, I don't have any problem with noob questions. That's why we are here! The beauty of the forum is that others step in and answer the questions too, everyone shares the support role, making it a pretty functional village.

I think the only type of post that ever really gets me - and which we very rarely see here - is the "how can you all be so stupid and not see things my way?" kind of thing. But hey, a village has to have the occasional village idiot I suppose.

My mother spoke of the "Village Idiot" often.  Sometimes I was accused of acting like him.
