Build and connection question
on:
July 20, 2013, 08:54:35 PM
Hi all. I've done a bit of searching and can't find this answer so hoping you can help.
A few of us in Melbourne, Australia are about to buy SEX kits do build together for a bit of fun. We are all buying it as an amplifier for headphones and predominantly lower impedance headphones.
Can you tell me 2 things:
1.) Is the headphone jack a low output impedance connection? (as opposed to adapting the speaker taps for a headphone socket)
2.) Is there any point getting the impedance switch add-on or is this for speaker outputs only?

IIRC, the headphone jack is on the same wires as the speaker output. So whichever you choose for the speakers goes to the headphone jack as well.
I can't tell you about the switch, I don't know how it is integrated into the amp, sorry.

The available output impedance configurations are 4/8/16/32 ohms. And yes the speaker and headphone outputs are the same feed. When you plug in a headphone it disconnects any connected speakers. The impedance switch kit could be useful if you switch between, say, 32 ohm headphones and 8 ohm speakers frequently. If you are using the amp exclusively with headphones or mostly with speakers the switch is probably not that necessary.

Thanks to both of you for the info!
A friend who is also buying one was talking about reducing the size of the resistor on the HP socket. Is that of any benefit? I've also read somewhere that others remove it altogether I think.

There is no longer a pair of resistors on the headphone jack.
