OT whatever happened to John Doe?

Not like it's been keeping me up at night,..
But I sometimes wonder about those bleeding edge musicians who had a big impact.
I'm talking about the John Doe who along with Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake formed the LA punk band X (you might note that Dave Alvin also played with X for a time).
