The bell ends on the power transformers we supply are raw steel with a temporary, somewhat waxy/oily protectant applied to them. You will need to apply a more permanent finish like paint or clear coat. Before you apply that finish be sure you clean the oil off very well. We suggest a good solvent like mineral spirits or naptha, followed by a run in a dishwasher. Scuff the surface with a Scotchbrite pad before you spray on your finish and it will stick better to the steel.

If you didn't get around to applying a finish yet and your bell end is starting to show signs of rust, don't fret. A little bit of Barkeepers Friend and a damp rag or paper towel will take light rust right off. But get it protected soon after you get that rust off!
