Strange Hum

Ok folks I think this is really strange. 

The stylus on my cartrigde fell off.  So I have a replacement cartridge.  My original cartridge was a Shelter so I used an SUT.  My replacement cartridge is a Dynavector 20X hi-output so I do not use the SUT.  I had some hum from the SUT setup but only noticeable at really high volumes. 

My setup requires that my TT is about 6 feet from my Phono Preamp (Eros).  In the SUT setup it was no problem because I could connect the interconnects into the SUT and the Tonearm cables to the SUT.  With the Dynavector I do not need the SUT so I needed some way to connect the interconnects and the Tonearm cables.  I found some RCA  Couplers at Fry's that did the trick.  When I turned it on and tried to play an LP a very loud hum happened and it is volume control sensitive.  I played around with the interconnects changed their position on the Eros and it still happened.  Also,  it only happens out of the right side. 

There is metal exposed at the RCA Coupler Cable/Interconnect interface.  When I held the right side coupler to the left side coupler the hum disappeared.  So I put a wire jumper between the two and the hum is gone. 

What might cause this and by putting in the jumper will it degrade the sound,  ie less mid-range or bass. 

I look forward to any input. 

I will be going back to my Shelter once I have Soundsmith redo my Stylus.  The sound is so much better.

You might have a loose or disconnected cartridge wire.
