Does anyone have some HD-6XXs I could borrow for a couple of weeks? We are looking into doing a little amp development that involves the HD-6XX as one of the most likely matchups. I don't have any more info to offer than that at this time.

Thanks for the offer, Alonzo. I am specifically looking for the Massdrop HD6XX model.

Oops, my bad.  Forgot they put out the Massdrop version.  If you get a chance you should try the 820's!

I've got a pair you can borrow.

I just got them in the most recent "drop", so I haven't actually used them yet.
If you don't mind the cost/time of shipping to and from Norway you're welcome to borrow them.

I think they should pass as a "letter" (untracked box) with the Norwegian Post, so shipping to you should be about $23-24.

Thanks, Jorgen, for the kind offer. That's too much hassle for you to bother with. I was hoping one of the Seattle Head Fi group members might see my post, as I know a few of them were going to buy 6XXs. If someone local does not have a pair to loan I will just ask if I can borrow some from the gang at Massdrop. Those guys have really figured out their business model over the past few years with the Massdrop Made concept.

No problem, I just know traffic can be a little slow on this subforum so I figured maybe shipping across the Atlantic could be faster than waiting for someone more local to reply  :)

Massdrop is really getting ...massive for sure.
Their line of Massdrop Made products can be quite intruiguing.
Almost makes you wonder if there’s a catch!  :o

From what I’ve read the HD6XX is supposedly identical to the HD650 (apart from the colour).
So it seemed like a great way to save $100-150 on a brand new headset!
-had to wait three months, sure, but I’m good at waiting.

So far the only impression I have of the HD6XX come from their box, which was MASSIVE!

I've just recently seen one Massdrop Made product and the packaging and presentation is impressive indeed. Pretty sure the competitive pricing is largely about the economy of scale more than any difference in quality, because things like the custom boxes and die cut foam they use are hugely expensive in the small quantities like we do Jagers in. If you can sell 40,000 HD-6XXs I imagine you get a pretty serious price break from the factory.

What is the story with these Massdrop HD6XX units? They seem to be made from official Sennheiser parts but they then allow them to be sold at a much lower price than their own versions. It seems an unusual business model to adopt from an old and respected manufacturer.

My guess is that Sennheiser are now focusing on the HD660s. Thus the HD650 is a design on its way out. So it makes sense to work with Massdrop to handle a huge pre order of a design they are fully tooled up for but probably no longer planning to make in quantities. The tooling and R&D was undoubtedly paid for a long time ago. From what I have read the HD6XX is pretty much indistinguishable from the HD650 except for the finish and cabling. I can imagine about 7,960,000 reasons to do the HD6XX run.

Fun fact, HD650's were initially manufactured here in Ireland, but after a factory fire production was moved to Germany so i suspect some tooling was lost and had to be remade.  The current line of 600 series headphones are manufactured in Ireland again, while some of the lower end models are made in the fast east.  And AFAIK the 800 series are made in Germany.

Doc - did you get a pair?  I have one that I can send.  I've got a few too many headphones around and won't miss them.
