I have been going over the instructions for the SM2 and see that the red wire from the plate choke goes to empty terminals. Is this to preserve the length of wire to use the full winding for experimentation or for a 45 conversion? In the S3X the unused choke lead is cut short and capped off. Thanks

Yes, you'll want that if you decide to use 45s.  We haven't (yet) come up with a reason to keep the lead for the partial tap around in the SEX.
