The big one is simply efficiency - no voltage drop and no heater power, so a smaller power transformer, smaller amp, less wasted power. Schottkys are as quiet as tubes, and the regulation is better - I don't think the sonic difference is very much.

I may go with switches as they would make for good muting options.

Paul, can the primaries of the original Sex amp be shorted too?
