Its just one of those things that had been eating at me... I'm not mentioning any names, etc. Not Bottlehead folks. It has to do with another blog that has to do with "computer audio". It has to do with this BS about building a "dedicated server" that is stripped down to do nothing more than deliver digital audio. I cant stay quiet any longer! I was sitting here today, doing what I usually do, "multitask" on my laptop to listen to music and do other things that the computer is designed to do...This idea that a dedicated processor somehow sounds better than one that is engaged in "other" tasks sounds better is pure bunk! First of all, in ANY computer based audio applications, the CPU, RAM etc. is ALWAYS going to be multi tasking.... I just think its dishonest to some how imply that a stripped down LINUX system sounds better than a PC/MAC with equivalent quality audio software in place is ridiculous.

Sorry for the rant. Its just IMO crap.

You need to bitch about an issue you are having with another website on that website. If you have actual experiences to share about comparisons you have done I would be very interested to hear them. But this post is kind of like listening to my brother in law spew opinions about politics.

Well, as someone that uses one of those stripped Linux systems I'll chime in.

The reason I went this route is because of one single thing. FAN NOISE. I hate fan noise and even hard drive noise. So my goal was to build a server based on a low power FANLESS computer. I got my ALIX computer from Doc B. He took a different path and made me a smoking deal on his ALIX board, case and wall wort power supply. The OS is Voyage Linux MPD. A barebones OS utilizing MPD (Music Player Daemon). The file sharing computer with my music library (now a $35 Raspberry Pi) and USB Terrabyte drive reside in another room and serves up files via my LAN. The Raspbery Pi runs Arch Linux (another stripped down Linux OS) that boots in about 10 seconds. This dual low power computer arrangement makes my listening area completely silent. It sounds really good to my ears playing through my MyDac, FPIII, Paramour II 45's and Orca's. And I can use my iPad as a remote control which is real convenient. Does it sound better than than another digital method? I don't know. But I do like what I hear.

I do hope that one day I'll have a Bottlehead DAC to use with my server. Until then I have something more than just satisfactory to listen to.

When I ventilate, the wife makes me excuse myself and leave the room.

Either that or pull the covers over her head!

Yah, but then it becomes a contest, in which I may have not prepared for.

Dan,

"Pecker" sounds like a low budget red neck porn movie.

I think the fan noise of the computer would bother me more if the ringing in my ears stopped. I just tune it out.

Way to go Eric. Had you started with something that was relevant to later off topic posts, this wouldn't have happened.
