In the grand scheme of upgrades, how big of an upgrade is an iron upgrade? I'm thinking it must be a bigger upgrade than coupling caps right?

Reason I am asking is I'm planning a iron upgrade, but iron is on the expensive side. So I'm wondering should spend on an iron upgrade on a little spud amp or should I put the money away towards a new kit?

Thanks
Cleet

What amp do you have? What iron do you have in it? What iron are you looking at? What other amp(s) are you considering if you go down the replacement path?

To answer your questions, it's going to vary how big of an upgrade it is. If we're talking Speco to BH or MQ, yah, that's pretty huge. Without knowing specifics, it's hard to guess how big of a change it will make. Bigger than caps is a reasonable expectation, most things considered.

Hi Fullhead

The amp in question is a little 6CL6 SEP spud kit I got from Jerry Curtis. I was drawn to the pure simplicity of it - nice honest sound, clean and humble design, cheap tubes. Sweet little amp. Obviously the kit is put together to meet a price, so the iron is not the best. I was thinking of sticking in some partial silver Electra print OPT trannies. I'm driving double back loaded horns, fostex 206 based speakers, so power wise it fits the bill.

Ironically from Jack Elliano of Electra print's email I get the idea that he is skeptical that I'll be getting any improvement.

I am eyeing one of them Stereomour kits. I've built a couple of Doc kits before. My seduction turned out very very nice.

Hi Cleet,

If it were me I'd get the Stereomour. Especially with Doc B's 10 percent offer if you get it in the next 24 hours. I might order one myself even though I don't need another amp right now.
