LED question

i'm assuming a chipped LED is a bad thing? i musta knicked it during assembly. I see them available as parts, probably for a good reason, eh? Thanks in advance.

Yes, they are delicate little things. Originally (20 years ago) the specific chemistry/manufacturing method was available as a more normal-looking and sturdier LED, but the HLMP-6000 is now apparently the only form still being made. We think it is still the best performing LED in this application, so we put up with the mechanical issues.
