Likely suspects can also be powerline adapters and noise from the server pc passing through the dac (I used to use a laptop that when streaming would introduce a low level noise but was fine via usb) so if you can try a different source or use optical instead of usb from source to dac. Routing of power lines even things like a electric water heater or radiator can transfer noise through the system which it might only be intermittent as it trips in and out on its thermostat. Light dimmers etc but if you are systematic in your approach with a bit of trial and error you should be able to nail down the cause quiet quickly in his house.

Shoot for the moon if you miss you will still be amongst the stars!

I'm sure you have already done this, but I have had intermittent static on the left channel on my stereomour. So today I pulled the 2 week old tube in and out a few times and cleaned the already shiny pins with alcohol. Been playing it now for three hours and the static is gone.

I haven't cleaned the pins, but I have tried several different sets of tubes.  No change.

I'd also toss out there that you should take one of those little outlet testers over, to be sure there isn't an open ground.

Well... my buyer has sold it on already.  Seems he doesn't hold onto gear very long.  He did, however, assure me that he wouldn't have sold it on if it were still making the static noise.  He looked around for a likely culprit in his house and apparently found an ethernet over AC adapter that he'd forgotten about still plugged in.  Once that was gone, I think all was good.  Thank you, everyone for all your help and advice.

Didn't you only have it for a week yourself?

I had it for a couple of weeks.  I built it with the intention of selling it, though.

That one was the 5th one that I've built.

I can see why he moved it on, though.  If you're always waiting to hear static it sort of takes away from the enjoyment of listening to music.
