So I got the Speedball kit from Jim R. for a song. Put it together yesterday and today.

How many times does everyone say to take it slow and re-read steps, etc, etc..? And I've done four or five kits!

Still: I put the heat sinks on the wrong side of the boards  :o  Anyway, I had them all soldered in place and it was tough getting them off again. I had to unscrew the transistor first, then get the heat sink off, then work at the transistor. My solder wick wasn't so successful at getting all the solder so I ended up really giving those transistors a beating to get them out and re-attached to the heat sink. Anyway, finally the heat sinks are on the right side (don't tell me it wouldn't have mattered!).

I was convinced I'd broken the transistors. Plus, I was in a foul mood because of it, and still continued with the build. Never a good thing, right?

And with all the stories of difficult Speedball builds, mine checked out OK with voltage readings. I'm now listening to it and loving it!!

Glad it all worked out in the end. I think it was P.B. That said most Speedball errors were due to improperly installed heat sinks. It usually had to do with the insulator arrangement though. I didn't have any issues when I built mine. I credit the well written documentation for that.

I suspect the more kits we do the more likely to assume we know what we are doing  :(
