I disabled the loctal mechanism as per the manual but when I plugged in the tubes they were loose. So I crimped it a little and tried again and now they are in and locked good. I realize I'll need to be able to remove them some day. Any hints???

You can flip the Smash over and press them out from the bottom side.  I'd worry about this when the tubes actually die, which could be a very long time.

Thanks for the advice. It looks like the 4P1L tubes may be less visible from underneath after Smashup installation but I guess still accessible?

Yes, you may have to unscrew a board.

A tiny flathead screwdriver may be able to pry the tube out as well.
