western electric 100f

i have a pair of these (http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/western_el_100_f100_loud_speaker.html)
that i wish to use with my mp3 player/sansa fuze.
one has a defective r5. does anyone know what this is and how i might obtain one.
i post here only because i follow this forum daily and know how many sharp people there are around here.

interesting??? velly intillestingk!!!!! who said that? colonel klink?-or laugh in -well anyway r5 could be a resistor-but that is a vague description of its ailments -it may need a lot  more than that- does this have rca jacks/jack -has it been updated- if the capacitors are original do not plug it in--it will not last long if you do--that is a cool idea for small room or tabletop sound--gives me ideas--give us more info--are able to work on this thing?

i know the only problem is this r5 component

dgb-F3 is a ballast tube--i had to search--essentially a resistor in a glass or metal tube with a octal base--i can see your confusion-as i was very confused looking at the pics in your first post showing all the tube bases from underneath--the following link is said to be a schematic-hand drawn-it may be the multiple resisitors on the left of schematic-not sure-pilot light would be a clue--seems to be several wires coming from the pins-turn it over and have a look see if that is so--
if you can't find one-you can simulate under the chassis easily enough-just not sure of the wattage

A quick look shows that there are equivalent tubes with double-voltage heaters - 50L6, 50Y6, ans 12SL7. Wouldn't that eliminate the need for a large ballast? Throw in a 150mA/6.3v pilot light and you are at 118.3 volts, close enough to 120v. Just a thought.

i did redo a stereo pair for my flac player.
fun to think of something 60odd years old being
repurposed for high tech.
