ok Doc.....

my neighbour has just been in with his meter, and everything checked out as it should...... my meter doesnt seem to want to read in DC........

i've just turned it around and am giving it a test as we speak......

thanks again for your help..... this forum is awesome, as is this sound i'm listening to.......

Black wire on power transformer terminal #5 looks like it's not soldered at all on your pics... At least from that angle. BTW, glad you sorted your problem out.

man....

no sooner had i sorted out the problem (of having a dodgy, brand new, meter), i had to shoot off to a hallowe'en party........ only having time to listen to 2 full tracks...... no-one at the party seemed very interested in what i had been trying to build the last few days, or at all sympathetic to the fact that i just wanted to get back home and listen to..... i don't know...... pearl jam now, bit of john lennon when i got in......... kinks are calling for my attention..... so are the small faces....... maybe some four tops after that........... its going to be a very long, amazing night........

thanks to everyone who helped me. 

can't wait for the next project.
