Sandpaper grit for wood stain?
on:
June 01, 2017, 10:40:28 AM
The crack manual tells me to use 220 grit sandpaper, but the wood stain I'm using says to use 120~150 grit. Which instructions do I go with? Thank you very much, and sorry for posting such a non-audio related question.

The instructions with your stain are what I would start with.
You may want to sand after staining with at least 220 grit, if not more, to produce a smooth wood finish prior to applying a top coat.

In my experience the surface finish of the Bottlehead base's is very good so you don't need very abrasive paper. I usually use 320 grit, then apply the stain or oil.
After the first coat the grain will stand up so the best option is to use some steel wool to flatten it out which will leave you with a silky smooth finish.

Personally I sand down to 1000 grit between coats of gun oil. It all depends on the goal of your finish.

this is mine after staining and sand with 120 grit, and then again with 220 grit then 2.5 layers of clear coat.
