I have a project in the queue (after I finish bringing the master bedroom into this century) that involves using my S.E.X. 3.1 to power a single, 8 Ohm, wide-band driver but retains stereo headphone ability.
My experiment involved simply attaching both the left and right sets of speaker wires to the driver and playing a setup disk that included a L/R channel identification track. It sounded reasonable for a raw driver held in cupped hands. Plugging in the cans yielded the expected full in-skull experience. I let it play through the Fostex FE126En long enough to know the amp wasn't heating up beyond normal.
For the gurus: Any potential down-side to this very basic set up?

You're certainly not going to break anything doing this.  You could experiment with setting the amp up for 4 ohm operation, or adding a 2-3 ohm resistor between the + speaker wire in the amp and the red binding post whilst leaving the amp set for 8 ohms.

What you are describing is an intended application of the design. That's why there are switches on the headphone socket - they cut out the speakers when a headphone plug is inserted.

You'll probably find the headphones to be louder than the speakers, at the same volume setting - that's the only downside I know of.

With just agreeing on the carpet left, I was able to complete my little project.
Bought off the bay, it started life in 1947 as a tabletop radio/record player. Someone had done a decent job on the outside finish but the TT was gone, the tuner glass was broken, a control knob missing, etc.
Ended up with a Scan Speak 10F in a small sealed enclosure, and Tang Band W6 firing down from a ported box. The S3X amp is augmented by a little 25W sub plate amp, and receives signal from a Fiio M6.
I added hairpin legs and it gets high WAF while sounding PDG!

Thanks guys.
If the innards had been more complete it might have made a nice restoration. Being rough in that regard made it easy to just finish gutting it and use the shell.
As PJ stated the headphones do play louder, but in our modest bedroom the speakers are plenty. Our clothes dryer has graciously supplied me with several single socks to stuff the port, helping to tame the boom from the corner placement.

Yeah, never throw those single socks away, you never know when you may need them.
