Hi guys, after spending many happy years with my Crack + Speedball I now have the urge to add a second line-level input to make switching sources easier than swapping out RCAs every time.

I'll have no problems installing panel-mounted RCA jacks, but I'm unsure as to what sort of switch I need in terms of poles and how to wire correctly.

I'd like to have a simple two-position switch that simply moves between the two inputs. I imagine it will need two sets of three pole inputs (L/R/Ground) and one output (L/R/Ground) - is this correct? Or should I use a common ground?

If anyone might have experience in this or could link me to a part (along with pointers on what to solder where) it would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

A common ground is OK.  Just just need a DPDT switch.  Be sure you don't get one that is momentary, or has something like (ON)-ON listed in the description, as the parentheses mean a momentary contact.  Also watch out for the ON-OFF-ON type switches as they have a third position in the middle that's nothing.

I appreciate your reply, thanks Paul!

The DPDT switches I'm looking at have six solder tabs - two on the L/R sides, and two in the 'middle'. What do the inputs/ground go into, and what does the output go into?

Thanks again in advance mate.

I personally would use an outboard switch box, probably 3 in 1 out. A quality unit shouldn't have you thinking that there is a loss of sound quality. Use decent leads.

Add the 2 new input jacks and connect the ground tabs to the existing pair.

Now move the wires from the center of the existing jacks to the center pins of your switch, the top 3 are one channel the bottom 3 the other.

Now run wire from the center pins of the existing jacks to one end of the switch and the new jacks to the other.

Just keep the L/R channels consistent make sure the new jacks are mounted in the same manner as the existing...John
