Ok, I finally have the wife's permission on picking up a set of head phones.   I thought choosing my speakers was a pain, this is worse.   I am not looking for electrostatics but a quality set.    Something like the Sennheiser SD800's or similar to give you an idea.   I will be building the Mainline 1.1 from what I have read.   I like the thought of planers but I live in BF nowhere and have no real ability to try to an thing..   My closest serious store is about 3.5 hours away in the Kansas City area or in Tulsa.  So with that said, are there any directions you can all steer me.   For reference, I have both Eros 1 and 2 phono preamps,  Beepre (1), Carver Black Magic 350's mono blocks and a Vincent 332 amplifier, two turn tables, VPI Classic 2 and Micro Seiki DD8, Magnepan 3.7I's  speakers and various other toys, cable, etc.   Thanks in advance

If you don't really have access to a place to try things, then your best bet is going to be to buy used pairs on eBay to try out, then just resell them if you don't like them.  You'll lose a few bucks here and there on shipping and auction fees, but that's going to provide you with the most opportunities to try stuff out.

As a general starting point I have liked Sennheiser HD 600/650/800 and some Focal models (sorry I don't recall which) quite a lot with the Mainline. Sorry to say I can't make the most useful recommendations of the very latest cans. Part of the reason I have retired is my golden ears have become a bit tarnished with age.

If you can wait a bit to buy you might consider going to an audio show or two that will have an area dedicated to headphones, like AXPONA.
