I'm in the process of installing the speedball upgrade and I would like to upgrade my caps while I have the unit upside down.
Please K.I.S.S., I'm having enough trouble with the speedball , what are some good replacement  Filter caps that I can stick into U20 and U21, U14 and U15, U12 and U13. Output caps to stick into U6 and U7, U10 and U9. PLEASE no electronic geek talk  just plain simple, preferably small single syllable words ( try cap XYZ for hole # what ever).  I'm a pilot I fly- um. I don't fix- um.

Thanks
Danny
P.S.
All you smart electronic guys don't be offended. Two of the greatest Geeks ever Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are my heroes. I'm just a simple guy looking for a simple answer.

Why are you replacing the filter caps? Or should I ask your ground crew?  ;)

Doc,
You are my ground crew .Why would I want to replace my filter caps? Obviously I don't know what I'm doing or I would not ask stupid questions. Now that we've established that maybe you could enlighten me on which caps I could replace to improve on an  already stellar piece of equipment. I'm a buyer not a builder this is all new to me. This is a project not an obsession. If  my questions are too simple for this forum I apologize to you and and all participants.
Is it too hard to answer a simple question or do I as a FNG have to pay my dues or get special blessing from the super senior members of this forum.
I'm just a simple guy asking a simple question.

You won't know if there is any improvement if you do this when you do the Speedball at the same time.

The output cap is sonically important and has been replaced with polypropylene film types by many, with universally positive reports. Solen is a popular brand; IIRC they have a 90uF version that many have used.

In theory the last power supply cap is second in importance.

All such caps are quite large; there may not be room to do both changes. These pesky practical realities are part of the reason the threads on the subject get so long and involved. Hopefully some Crack builder will join in with specifics (I'm not a headphone dude so I'm the wrong guy for that!)

I have found that second to the speedball the output cap is the best place to upgrade.  I have 2 cracks one has expensive caps, the other "cheap" ones, there is a difference between the two, but they are not huge.  I would suggest  finding a ~100uf film cap (correct voltage rating) and what ever brand it is it will be much better than the stock caps.  There are lots of suggestions in other threads, but my "cheap" caps are here:

Yeah as Sturmj says, just replace the output caps with film ones. We did indeed use the best electrolytics we could find for the job because films would have increased the base price of the kit a lot. And install the speedball. The stock filter caps are good ones and the speedball will do a lot more in terms of improving the perceived performance of the power supply than some haute couture filter caps. The guys who sell expensive filter caps will no doubt disagree with me.

Im pretty simple myself compared to many of these gents.   So, from a simple guy to a simple guy,  as already suggested, replace the output caps with films and do the Speedball upgrade.  I would do them seperately as suggested so that you can hear the effect of each one.

Speedball makes the largest difference.  Output caps probably the second largest.  The other stuff generally requires a lot of real estate with several largish - large replacement components to make what very well may end up arguably being less of a difference than either of the other two relatively easy/simple upgrades mentioned.  In other words, more of a cumulative effect from several mods, not just as single mod like the film caps or speedball.    Check the Gallery forum to see how far some builders have gone.

For those output caps,  Solen 100uf,  Axon 90uf, Mundorf MKP 100uf, Erse 100uF and Dayton (Parts Express) 100uf are among the affordable and readily available film cap options.
