I have just finished building my music server.  Dialing in Jriver Media player now.  I have decided to build the Crack and I understand that it is a high impedance Headphone amp.  but I can't seem to find any glowing endorsements for anything other then the Sennheiser HD 600, HD 650 ------> HD 800.  Everything else is spoken of as kind of a compromise.  Is this truely a one of a kind match made in heaven?  Is it that there just aren't that many High Impedance cans to choose from? or Am I missing some other options?  At the end of the day, I will probably obtain a pair of 600s but I hate the idea that I chose out of ignorance and there were other options.  PLEASE chime in!!!!!

Beyerdynamic has a few high impedance headphones.  I know there's the DT880, DT990 and T1.  I think all are available in 32ohms, 250ohms and 600ohms.  I can't comment on the quality of the pairing as I don't own any of them.  I'm sure other brands like AKG have a few high impedance headphones.

I have directly tried Beyer DT880, T1 and T90 models with my Crack.

The T1 is my headphone of choice and is only made in 600 ohm.

IMO the DT880 (pretty sure I tried the 600ohm version) is good, but I'd choose the HD650/600 over it. The T90 is very good for those who like bright signatures and is similar to (but brighter than) the T1. That said, the T90 is not as good as the T1 IMO so if there is budget available it's well worth the stretch to the T1.

Of everything I've heard, I think my order of recommendations would be:

  • Beyer T1
  • Senn HD800 (second only because of personal preference, not quality of can)
  • Beyer T90 if you can do bright signatures
  • Senn HD6X0 (either model depending on taste)
  • Beyer DT880 600 ohm

A lot of good advice on topic can be found in this thread - http://www.bottlehead.com/smf/index.php/topic,546.0.html - and on this page - http://www.bottlehead.com/et/whichheadphoneamp.htm - respectively.

Personally, I can confirm that the crack plays very nicely with my 250 ohm dt880's (far better than they sounded with my prior Woo 3), but I agree with Loquah that I generally prefer my hd650's to my dt880's, and my hd800's over both.  Hope this helps and happy shopping.
