This is one of those things where it doesn't look that useful/great on paper, but those who have tried it swear by it!

  And a stepping stone leading up to a Smash build? I can solder but I need to be held by the hand building something like an amp.

The instructions manuals from Bottlehead are so detailed, it's nit much different than holding your hand. 

Take your time, you'll do just fine.
