Jim,

I just confirmed that I will be in Colorado, sometime on the 9th of July. I am thinking a pickup might be in order.

Back in the early 'aughts' ('02-'04), just as SACD was being touted as the latest greatest format, I had a small retail shop. I didn't sell SACD players, but there was sufficient interest to get me to go buy one to be able to do comparos. People buying into conventional wisdom expected SACD to sound best, followed by CD trailed badly by vinyl. Man were they shocked when, in informally blind comparos, SACD came in dead last, CD in the middle and vinyl waaaay ahead.

I didn't have my Otari 5050 at that point, but from what I've heard since, including a visit from Charlie King and his Stellavox at the last VSAC, reel-to-reel is the Killer Diller, but I haven't quite made it to the commitment level to upgrade the beast, create bullet-proof packaging and ship it to audio shows. I'm really tempted, though.

Anybody heard from Alan??

Alan, I sent you a PM on the 7th or 8th with my address and phone number -- did it not get to you?

Can I assume that you don't want the deck?

Confused,

Jim

I received 2 Bluegrass LPs this week.  The first one is The Tony Rice Unit, "Acoustics."  The second is David Grisman "Acousticity."  BTW, they were $5 and $6 delivered.

I'm playing "Acoustics" right now and it is amazing.  Almost as good as The Tony Rice Unit "Unit Of Measure" which I wish were on Vinyl.

I do wish I could get into RTR and the tape project but the outlay would be prohibitive to me and my wife.  She makes the lion's share of the income.

I keep looking for a copy of "Uncommon Ritual". Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, and Mike Marshall. My favorite out of all the Appalachian collection.

If it comes up on any of my saved searches let me know if I am bidding against you.  My ID is the same as here.

Ten months later I have played a dozen or two dozen CDs.  It has all been LPs otherwise.

Till I earn some money I won't buy the Eros but it is the first thing I will do when I am made an offer.

Okay, Grainger, thanks for the tips on these records, but where did you turn these up at such a good price, delivered?  A Discogs seller has a copy of "Acoustics" LP for $25.

Record collections seems so much smaller when you only count the well-recorded/produced ones....

Cute, but the constant whistling and clatter would disturb me.  The steam on the LP might pose a problem, or might clean it, who knows?

Syncro, I bought them on ebay.  I have set a maximum of $10 delivered for LPs.  I do know I was lucky that there were no competing bids but Bluegrass doesn't seem to be as competitive as some other genres.

I've always been tempted by vinyl. Since high rez digital has come along my attention has been diverted. For me I guess it just comes down to where I'm willing to spend the money. Good to hear you're enjoying it so much.
best regards, John

Sorry

Have to say I enjoy CD more,
Probably cause I switched over in the late 80's, and built a system to make CD sound the best it could, which means that vynil now does not cut the mustard in the Bass dept.

Guess thats why I came over to tube amps, to calm down the treble from early CD players, though they have got alot better since then and I don't miss the crackles, in fact I now hate it when new CDs have fake crackle on them, though the new OMD has got a great track where they use a crackle loop as the bass track.

Before you ask yes I still have a record deck, its a Mithell Syncro (the perspex and glass platter one) that loks fantastic, with a moth arm and a Goldring 1042, so not too bad.
