General Discussion / Re: Tinnitus

I have a mild case a lot of the time (like right now). This may sound out in left field, but I have been getting theraputic massage for about a year now for my arthritis. In the process the therapist has been doing a lot of work on my neck. It seems to help reduce the tinnitus. I'm guessing maybe it relieves some stress on the vagus nerve or stimulates it, but I only know enough to be dangerous.

BeePre / Resistance Check on 52
« Last post by Emoreigns on April 29, 2024, 06:52:31 AM »
Good Morning,

My build on the BeePre has been going pretty smoothly up until now- I made it to the resistance check on page 52, but have come to a stop here. I am not getting any reading with my meter for either of the resistance checks- It is just showing the 0L reading, which I believe means the circuit isn't completed?  There are some joints that are not soldered yet, so perhaps those are the problem? My multimeter works fine for testing resistors, so I don't believe that it is the problem. I've attached a couple pictures. I appreciate the help as always! Am I just overlooking something here?

General Discussion / Re: New isolation platform

I think this is a really great idea. I’ve been told an air tube is the best for this, but never quite thought through how that could be implement without introducing a wobbling. This answers that question. Also cool to be able to match the platform with the rest of one’s BH equipment.

General Discussion / Tinnitus

Until recently, I had no issues with my hearing. Since my late 20s I’ve been careful to wear earplugs to loud concerts, and I never turn up the music so loud that it is even close to uncomfortable.

But I went to a concert five weeks ago that seems to have changed everything. It was a concert of classical Indian music, so I assumed (wrongly) that it wouldn’t be amplified. And when I saw there was amplification, I figured it wouldn’t be an issue, because, well, it’s Indian classical music! How loud can it get? Not that loud, actually, but there was something about the space and the PA system that really hurt my ears. A piercing hurt. Strangely, my wife and son, the former of whom is usually very sensitive to loud music, didn’t have the same reaction I did.

Which is a ringing in both ears. I assumed it would stop after a day or two. It’s been five weeks and no letup. I saw an audiologist today who basically said it would be permanent. I’m in mourning. I can no longer enjoy music, which has to compete with the ringing, and if it’s turned up even slightly above normal listening levels, hurts my ears and causes a kind of extra overtone ring.

I don’t know what to do. I’m seeing an ENT soon, but at this stage I’m both frustrated, mad, and very very sad. How could one concert lead to this, a concert that clearly didn’t both anyone else? Does this mean the time, money, and care I put into my audio system is now for nought?

I’m posting here I guess for some kind of support. I doubt I’m alone. How have you Bottleheaders dealt with hearing loss, damage, tinnitus, etc? Is there any hope?

Eros Phono / Eros 2
« Last post by benzxc on April 28, 2024, 10:53:57 PM »
Does anybody know the dimensions of the Eros 2 and BeePre 2? Apologies if this information is available but I cannot seem to locate it on the site or forum.

I caught the DIY bug after building the Pipettes (reminded me of how fun it was to build the Crack and Stereomour II that I built like 4-5 years ago), and I am dying for something that I can take out my soldering station out. So I am trying to find a new project to do. I don't really need a new phono or preamp but if it fits...

Is there a specific online retailer that you would recommend outside of Ebay? I am happy to pay more to avoid the hassle of potentially getting a fake part that does not work as well.

Yes, the pot seems to be in spec.

Hopefully, PB will weigh in - he knows more than I do about the parts market. The ALPS control is indeed widely used, enough so that it is frequently faked. The price on that Ebay page seems too low to me, but I don't know enough to give good advice. I do know that you need the PC board.

That made a difference! Using those numbers, I calculate the gain difference (left to right) to be:

max    0%
2:00    -6.2%
12:00  +7.5%
9:00   +5.8%
7:30   +7.8%

This suggests that most of the gain difference is in the pot, at least in the range between 7:30 and 12:00. This forum has many posts about upgrading the pot.

I am measuring between where the RCA left and right wires go into the pot (red and white), and where they come out on the way to the tube. I have not been measuring the ground (black wires). Sorry for any confusion on this. I have limited experience working with electronics, and took one physics 101 class about 10 years ago now... we spent about a week working on basic circuits.

I should have clarified that, I did not measure the volume at zero before, but here is the measurement:

                                        Left     Right
0% (or 6:00 position)   89.8K    99.8K

If it is the 6080 tube, is there any way to test for an issue without just ordering a new one and plugging it in to see if this fixes it?
