Yes, the resistor trick is pre-attenuation.

How does that account for the mismatch in the signal between channels in the volume pot? Is it only an issue of perception because of the log taper of the pot? Or does it actually correct the mismatch?

It's difficult to exactly match the resistance on two tracks of an inexpensive carbon pot, particularly at the low volume end. The attenuators just require you turn the pot up higher for the same volume level, into a region where the carbon tracks are more closely matched.

Thanks. So it is a combo of the perception in the log taper and a physical correction. Cool.
