Hi all.
Soon a Crack headphone amplifier will be travelling half way around the earth to reach its final destination,
which is in Vietnam to drive a pair of Sennheiser HD-650?
And the happy owner will have an un-erasable smile on his face and that will last until he kicks the bucket.
Yes, I will be the happy owner of a Crack that a fellow member here by the name of galyons (I hope I go his name right) put together for me.
He did the soldering, painting, staining, up-grading and more.
He did such a fantastic job, that I can recommend him with any hesitation.
My Crack looks so nice, awesome, fantastic and sexy that I will have no other choice than put beside him his big brother the no other than: Stereomour.
However, this will only happen if I win at the lottery.
Here is what I am talking about.

Hi JamieMcC
Looks gorgeous in red.
Red is my favorite color.
For the bypass caps, don't ask me, ask : galyons.
I don't have the Crack in front of me and I think he still has it.
Thanks for the comments.

Hi all.
Anyone can show mw how to change my avatar.
I want to post my actual fire red Crack.
Plus, I like to show the phrase:
Audio should be simple.
Thanks.

Guy 13

Please make your explanation extremely simple.
I am not crazy enough to set fire,
but not smart enough to extinguish it.
If you know what I mean?

Hi JamieMcC
Thanks for the simple instructions,
it worked on my first trial,
that's a first,
usually it takes my several dozens of try
and most of the time I give up.
But your step by step instructions made it super simple
for a none tech guy like me.
Thanks again.

Hi (Again) Jamie McC
While I got your attention, I will push my luck, by asking you:
How many posts does it take to be one step above Jr member?

Looks smart in red. What are the bypass caps?

The red isn't paint, it is hard anodized then dyed.  I left the nice BH texturing of the plate.

The bypass caps are Russian K75, a hybrid aluminum, paper and mylar in oil.  The electrolytics are Panasonic ED 47uf. (Guy runs Senn HD650's)  After listening with my vintage AKG K240 Sextett's, I think I may try 68 or 82uf Pannies.

I, too, like the red.  But the main functional purpose was to seal the aluminum and base against the Vietnamese humidity.  So, for once, form follows function!

Cheers,
Geary

There is a tremendously fatal flaw in that build that is likely to at least damage the 6080 at some point during operation.

Terminals 7 and 8 are nearly shorted.  8 and 9 are likely to short for the same reason.

Short against what?  Please don't make this a guessing game.

I assume you are referring to bypass caps and perhaps (?) shorting on the octal pin terminals?  The caps have shrink wrap on the lower part.  The octal socket pins below have insulating sleeves pulled down over them. The sleeves can be slid up the wires for de/re-soldering.  I was going to put the bypass caps on the sides with fly leads, but thought the shorter, more solid leads and insulation would be more reliable.

If you think that side mounting with fly leads would be safer/better I will do so.  I am trying to make the build as "bullet proof" as I can to, hopefully, avoid issues with the travails of this Crack's journey to Vietnam.

Cheers,
Geary
