Title: NEW WEBSITE COMING!
Post by: Doc B. on February 17, 2014, 07:34:12 AM
We have been cooking up a new website for the past six months or so. Mike Muncy and Josh Perelli of Helix Creative have been working hard to create something elegant and easy to navigate. I just got off the phone with code master Josh and he says we are ready to launch.

We will make the transition to the new site tomorrow night. So if you see things hiccup a bit don't worry, it will just be Josh soldering in the last few connections on the forum and adjusting the trimpots on the shopping cart.

So... a new URL for Bottlehead or just a software update?

I'm an engineer, you have to hit us over the head.

Doc,

A couple of punch list bugs...

- I can't login or even access the new site on either of my mobile devices - Android phone and tablet.  I've tried two different browsers, cleared my caches, etc but still come to the maintenance screen with the "moving to a new site" message.
EDIT - If I delete the www. from the url the new site loads fine.  Maybe the new DNS routing hasn't fully propagated.

- Can't upload an avatar image (this may be w feature, not a bug, but you could do it prior)

- if you click "show unread posts", then click to a specific post, then click "show unread posts again" to get back to the list, it seems to have marked all the posts in the list as read, not just the ones you've clicked on

- clicking "mark all messages read" results in a URL error.

Otherwise it seems to be very snappy.  Moving to a new site is a real PITA (I used to do this stuff in a former life). I'm sure it will shake out really well over the next few days.

Thanks for the bug reports. Please do post any glitch you find here. The development of this site has been a six month project and the web design crew is taking some very much needed time off after this feat of heavy lifting. We are going to let the new site run over the weekend and we will address the issues on Monday.

Yes images are coming up scrambled if you click on their link. We will look into it.

Looks like most of the images got corrupt, or didn't copy over properly.  Every one in my thread is blank, but the correct file size when downloaded.

Also public users cant upload attachments, web server permissions for the upload folder are incorrect.  Error is "The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved."

Nice upgrade on the web pages...

On the "Our Story" Page, there are two sections titled "Active Current Source Loading" - the 1st has duplicate text from the section above (Direct Coupling) - the 2nd is correct.

I have figured out that hosted pictures, like in my thread of Pictures Of Tools are fine.  But anything hosted at Bottlehead doesn't load for me.  I'm not sure if it is because I'm such a computer cripple or if that is the problem.

Could be either.

Having some slight issues logging on - sometimes my password is not recognised, in fact I reset it to double check that I was using the correct one, but the issue persists.
Also, if you log-on 'forever' & then navigate away from the forum page, you have to log-on again when you come back (in the 'old' days, you would remain logged in).

Plus, a little suggestion. The 'Go Up' button at the end of a thread page only takes you to the top of the first post on the page, would be better I think if it took you right to the top of the page (was the same before).

Thanks for the reports. We don't really need multiple confirmations of a bug that has already been pointed out, like the picture issue. That makes it a little more difficult to sift through the thread to find the posts about other items we may need to address.

You may want to consider changing the color of the "child boards" on the home screen from black to something else. It's very hard to see on a mobile device.

Hi,

all bigs messages in the forum (I guess) where truncated.

That should be an easy fix, i suspect a maximum post length setting.   Trying to reimport those posts from the old database, now that will make a web dev cry :'(

In relation to the images issue, add to the list http://bottlehead.com/favicon.ico is missing/corrupt, its the little icon that gets attached to bookmarks in your browser.

Nice job, Doc and all! I'm always nervous when people say they're launching a new site as more than often it means either I can't use it anymore or, it is much more cumbersome to use. In this case the new site "looks and feels"pretty much identical to the old one from the point of a screen reader user.

Thanks much to you and your web guys!

Great Jim, glad it is working for you. The forum should be pretty much unchanged and if anything the web site should be more consistent for the screen reader.

It looks like sticky note called Paramount 1.1 Voltages  needs to be fixed after website upgrade.

Also, is there any way to zoom-in main BH web site somehow (not the forum site) while reading on tablet or cell phone? Before upgrade that was possible. I dbl. checked my browser settings to make sure that I use 'desktop' mode and even tried different browser but with no luck.
It's really helpful if you can zoom-in text when reading on small, portable device.

I don't think the zoom feature is available, as the site has been designed to scale for each kind of screen. I'm suspect it has to be set up one way or the other.

The site looks fantastic. It is much cleaner looking, easy to navigate, and well organized. In the old site I especially dis-liked the fact that the text was centered which made it harder to read. All in all, well done.

I realize that this was mentioned very early on, but the "Mark All Messages Read" still doesn't work.   It generates this error message:

    Bottlehead Forum

An Error Has Occurred!
Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again.
Back

To clear the  "Show unread posts", I have to open each one.

My system config: PC=>Windows 8.1  >:(! => Firefox

Otherwise really liking everything.  I may have missed it, but I still don't see a direct link to the BH home page.

Cheers,
Geary

When I load the forum login page my Firefox "NoScript" plugin reports that it wants to run scripts from 198.101.157.109.  This seems a bit hinkey, is it part of the login programming?
Also, the Firefox feature for remembering login names and passwords does not recognise the "Username" and "Password" fields as such, and so does not pre-fill them as normal.  I have to manually enter these values each time.  Is this related to the script on 198.101.157.109?
If 198.101.157.109 is genuinely part of the Bottlehead site, then I suppose I could add it to NoScript's white-list.  However, all other websites and forums I deal with do not have this quirk.

These are not major issues for me but may highlight things for your web developer to look into.

Murry, I am using Firefox 27.0.1 and haven't had any of those problems.  So I don't think it is your browser.  Since the days of the odd log in page and changing my home page to the forum everything has run smoothly.

That IP address also belongs to Rackspace Hosting in Texas, the same location as the Bottlehead.com site so its safe to allow.  If you still have issues try clearing out your browser cache/cookies too.

Thanks mcandmar, I expect the hard-coded IP address is temporary "to get things working". I run NoScript and it flags any request to run a script from another host (to avoid XSS nasties).  I tried clearing my Bottlehead cookies and the browser DID prompt me "Do you want to save the password for bottlehead.com" the next time that I logged in (I clicked "YES"). I checked and Firefox has saved the username and password correctly.  However, for any subsequent login Firefox does not pre-fill the user name and password fields in the login form, as I would normally expect.

Hi Grainger, I am using the Firfox "NoScript" plugin as part of my security lock-down, so my browser's behaviour may differ from yours.  Are you using Firefox's secure password storage to automatically enter your user name and password when you log on?

I am pretty sure my Firefox is not at fault, it works fine with a large number of other sites and forums and was working fine with the old Bottlehead site.  Anyway, I am using Debian stable, so it is not advisable to upgrade to an unstable package.

I will wait patiently to see how things go from here, as I am still able to log on manually... :-)

I have been trying out the "attachments and other options) feature to upload a few pictures from my pc there seems to be a bug in the multiple attachment feature I tried a couple of times on different pc's just to confirm.

Adding a single picture file all works fine.

If I then use the (more attachments) and try to upload two attachments at a time my page goes to a "internal server error message" page.

When I navigating back via forum to the page being modifying I find the two pictures I had been trying to upload have been uploaded successfully.

I am having fun trying out some other features also

Wondering if I can change the glow colour

Bravo for the new website. Just one thing I find annoying with an iPad: the navigation menu on top of the website (not the forum). On a "normal" browser on a PC or a Mac, it's always there. But on an iPad, you have to click on the top button on the right to get it and I had a very long and hard time finding that. Maybe a hint "click here to navigate" or something more original would be a good idea.

We have decided to move our webhosting. The new hosting has been tested this weekend and I am told it is rock solid and that it screams. The migration to the new host should begin tonight. It should be reasonably transparent, and by tomorrow we hope to see the truncated forum posts repaired. Unfortunately issues beyond our control resulted in the the loss of the archived images that you now see scrambled on older forum posts. I do apologize for this, we did our best to preserve everything in the transistion but the somewhat out of date configuration of our old server made it impossible to avoid this problem. Naturally everyone is invited to restore any images they may have posted in the past, and I will attempt to restore all of the ones I have posted. We have changed over to a new and much more efficient database that should help to avoid any future issues.

I found the site at 7:10 EST this morning.  I'm wondering if I am having trouble at home.

Dan, I know you guys went down for an update some time yesterday.  I'm just curious if my home computer is having a problem.  It is slow for everything right now.

P.S. I had a request for a font size increase.  Is this good?

Hi Grainger49,

It is not your computer, I am trying to get everything running smoothly for you guys, we had some permissions that needed to be granted at the server level for people with issues uploading attachments and we had to do a reboot for these changes. We did a move recently and have upgraded the system up about 5 major patches, so please bear with us as we try to get everything SMF running smoothly.

Thanks Grainger49

Josh P.

On BH web site, in Blog section, is it possible to make left and right margins smaller, so that text is spread wider on the page. The way it's formatted right now is hard to read the blog on mobile devices.

Other than that congrats on new design. Love the color scheme and over all look.

Kris

P.S. and we finally have "Go to BH product's page" button on the top of forum page, woohoo! :)

Can you please fix your sticky note in Paramount 1.1 section about Voltage measurements? It looks like most of your post disappeared after web site upgrade.
Hope you have your post backed up.

Thanks in advance,

The log-in issue I was having seems better - don't have 3 or 4 log-in attempts before it accepts, at least now it logs-in first time.
Still doesn't keep me logged-in however, if I navigate away from the site I have to log-in each visit.

Plus now, the 'show unread post since last visit' doesn't work (it did before yesterday), just shows 'no new posts' even though there are new posts.

Sounds more like your mac/safari problem than BH website itself. Did you try to clean cookies, history, etc.?

I haven't used a Mac in years, do they still have that Keychain thingy that stores commonly used passwords?   If so delete any reference to Bottlehead, then clear cookies as above and try again.

Hello! I have a problem logging in to BH-s main site. It says to me that "Entered credentials are wrong", but they are 100% correct. And when I press lost password link and then enter my e-mail address there, then it says that " There is no user registered with that e-mail address". And the email address is also 100% correct. So basically my account has disappeared? Does that affect my order which I made last week?

Yeap, done all that stuff. Seems a little better now. Was all fine with the old site, just a few (minor) issues with the new.

They do, but as above cleared all the stored passwords, cookies etc.

Thanks for the suggestions.

We did get your order. I think a few new orders and regsitrations did not carry over in the last host change but we copied all of those orders over from the old server beforehand and they are in the production queue. It is possible that you will need to re-register when you order next time.

I am still having troubles with login in Chrome and Firefox. My go-to approach was to load the site and then read threads that came up since my last visit...that of course does not work at all anymore, not from home, not from work...I wish we could go back to the old forum, this new site has "improved" the fun away... loads of pictures are gone...I wonder if there was a test run on maybe a sub-category of the forum before making this jump into the empty pool... :P I sincerely wish that these bugs are going to be ironed out soon.... :( Good luck to us! Hi Doc,

Yes, I did that. For whatever reason, Chrome would not remember the password. It works for other sites, and Bottlehead is not flagged in the settings as a site where a password should not be stored.

That is strange as I am using Chrome but I am not having the same problem. I do have to hit the login button when I first go to the forum page, but my username and password are already loaded in their respective fields, and when I log in I can go right to my unread posts, no problem.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue, and has anyone who experienced it figured out what is causing it?

I would guess that unless we see some significant pattern here that the problems are most likely caused by some settings in the browser itself. The usual things to try might be in order - clearing cookies, clearing history, etc. Ccleaner can do a nice job of clearing up old cookies and history.

Have you tried clicking "Mark All Messages Read" to reset the timestamps on all threads (since the site was upgraded)?  You may need to have a clean start.

Firefox displays the unread posts fine for me.  I have the following URL saved in a bookmark - it goes straight in:

          http://bottlehead.com/smf/index.php?action=unread

Sorry Doc, but if there were no issues with the old site then the problems must be with the new site?
Done all the things mentioned & still the same problems of logging-in. Unread posts works sometimes & not at other times.

The site moved to a new server. That means there can be old IP addresses associated with some stuff in your browser. If your browser is still pointing to the old site for some functions it won't always find the new one. I'm sorry you guys are having trouble and I'm trying to help. If only three guys out of 2000 can't get the unread posts link to work, my hunch is that there is something in their browser settings that needs to be refreshed. You may need to clear cookies, clear history, reset passwords, or something else I don't know about to clear the old IPs. I have been able to get everything to work on my PC workstation with Chrome and my iPad with Safari. Eileen, PB and Josh all have full function too on PCs, Macs, iPhones and Androids. We have checked any thing we think might be pointing to the old site with Josh P. and all is coming up good. Any issue I have had on my own computers has been fixed by one of the three things I mentioned above, cookie, history or password updates.

One suggestion is that if your username and password are autofilling, try clearing the fields and typing them in manually and re-saving them. Also if you guys want to call I would be happy to offer suggestions, as it is not clear to me exactly what you have tried to correct the problems you are having. 206-451-4275, I should be in the office in about an hour.

I also had the  issues with the "Mark All Posts Read" and "Show unread posts since last visit.".  Logging out of the BH forum, closing my browser, reopening browser, logging back on to BH forum, then hit "Always Stay Logged On".
No more issues.  Doc is right that most of the issues are our own browsers cookies and cache.

I'm gonna plug Ccleaner one more time for folks with PCs. Eileen was having trouble logging in to our admin panel for the website last night. We first went into Chrome and tried clearing cookies and 7 days of history, with no luck. After I ran Ccleaner she logged in no problem. On my iPad i needed to go into Safari password settings and clear out the URL for the admin panel and then go to the admin page and simply log in. These kinds of approaches should probably work for forum log in too.

The other thing we have been hearing about is that people are having trouble logging in to the new shopping cart with their old user account. The customer registration info was not transferrable from our crappy old cart to this cool new one, and thus you will need to set up a new customer account the first time you place an order on the new store. You can also order as a guest.

Strangely this seems to have done the trick & all works well now. Thanks Murray (from a fellow Kiwi).

Another thing I did, which I'm not sure has been mentioned: delete all Bookmarks/Favourites pointing to BH.
Had several different ones with links to certain pages I wanted, so get rid of those before you reinstate them.

I have one remaining small issue.  It really is just a minor niggle, but I no longer have a favicon image in my saved links in Firefox (just a blank grey dashed-line rectangle).  It seems fairly common that these disappear for a while when websites get upgraded and sometimes clearing cache, etc. can get it reloaded.  No luck with that here. Is everyone else seeing the favicon?  The Favicon is a small square "Bottlehead" icon image that is displayed in the Firefox Tab, and with any saved links.  If no-one's seeing it, then maybe it wasn't copied across in the upgrade.

A few more data points. I deleted the cookies in Firefox this morning. The forum had me log in and show new post worked.

This evening, I tried again, still have to log in but show new post not working. For giggles I logged  in on my work laptop, running IE 8, which I do not use as a rule to visit this or other forums. The same, no new post. I log out go back to my home (Firefox) comp to post this, and show new post brings up a few from today and a couple from months  ago which I may have not read. This without making any changes. My i pad and Samsung tablet work fine.

I don't have any  trouble when I visit other forums that run "Simple Machine"...John

Ditto here - Win 7, Chrome.  Do users have to reduce their image size prior to uploading?  I've always done so (even when I linked to my own host).  Uploading a 4000 x 3000 image is asking for trouble unless SMF can auto-resize.   I'd think that perhaps a 1000 px max horizontal size would eliminate the problem.

There's a slider bar to let you scroll around the image, but it should indeed be tweaked a bit.

auto-resizing is something that facebook does, but we are not quite as big as facebook and our staff of programmers is noticeably smaller. I normally resize my pictures from 3000x4000 to 300x400 before posting to the internet. The easy fix is to limit the size of photos, which also keeps our server's memory usage manageable. Just sayin'...

Sorry, I know this comment is related to the 'new' forum rather than the new website, but this is the first time I log into here in a while rather than just checking in / reading, and I'm really surprised it stayed black/grey after login.  I suppose I always thought/assumed you all had copied the somewhat recent geekhack change where you get black/grey before logging in and then off-white thereafter.

I realize it matches the BH.com / new website scheme better, but a little hard on the eyes, no??...  Am I missing some way to change a user-defined setting?

I too am noticing this on mobile devices.  With the old site you could open any photo and it would size to the screen.  With the new site it's huge and I have stopped opening photos on mobile because of it.  It's fine on a computer of course.

My understanding of SMF is that this is a feature that can be turned on via the admin settings or via some CSS code as shown below.  Here's a discussion of auto-resizing from the Simple Machines forum.  You might want to show this to your programmers.

Great!  And it's not surprising to see that, in addition to being chief cook and bottle(head) washer, you are a bit of a programmer as well!

They seem to be resizing okay in Firefox and IE Explorer but my Chrome browser isn't resizing pop-ups from thumbnails so it looks more like a browser issue.

Okay - I had Chrome display the Bottlehead forum at 110% or 120% to improve visibility on my huge monitor.  Doing so short circuits the resize of the images.  Set to 100% the resize works fine.
